Winner of The Publican 2004 Pub Company of the Year
Managed (10-99 Outlets)
The judges were
impressed with the innovation and forward thinking of Glendola
Leisure. The 16-strong chain is tackling staff retention
levels by employing an occupational
psychologist as its
HR consultant. This person looks at
behaviour rather than skills and is working on a scheme to
help train managers to recruit the right type of staff.
It has a strong career structure for its employees with every
category of staff from glass collector to manager given a
training programme, which is ongoing.
The company has a high retention of its managers and all of
them have been developed through the organisation.
Glendola has also employed a sales person in its sites to work
with the manager to help push sales of the business.
To improve customer service the company has introduced table
service across its estate. To ensure levels are maintained the
company conducts market research talking to samples of 100
customers at a time. It is also constantly comparing itself to
other competitors in the local market.
Company turnover is £14.5m with a profit of £2m. It is
looking to invest £2 to £2.5m in existing and new
acquisitions over the year.
The company wants to cherry pick sites to add to
its portfolio and would like to acquire one to two sites a
year.
